MATT POOLE

Not Bad Art

Artist Statement:

Not Bad’s work is driven by a simple concept: art should be fun to look at.

The artist intends for the space and art to be symbiotic; they should share the dialogue of the room to create an atmosphere of creativity, joy, and playfulness. The Artist, Matt Poole, draws from the styles of geometric abstraction, colour field, minimalism, pop and street. The work is intended to strike balance between the bold and the ambient. For Poole, the painting is often secondary to the foundation it lies upon. The structure and shape of the work are the star of the show, while the paint serves to highlight what is already there.

About the Artist:

Matt Poole, born in Kitchener Ontario in 1996, always had a drive to construct and create. However, Poole suppressed artistic endeavours in favour for the more “realistic pursuits” in academics and finance for many years before giving in to his urges to paint and create. He kept ‘Not Bad’ as a side project/hobby throughout his studies at McGill university. But, it was in 2020, when he was locked inside for the COVID-19 pandemic that he allowed himself to explore freely the idea of becoming an artist. While the style behind Not Bad Artwork has changed over the years, moving from generic canvas to wall sculptures, reliefs, and sculpture, the core idea has remained: art should be fun to look at.

About the Installation:

785 Mill demolition project

Acrylic on Bricks.

The 3rd iteration of the artists demolition series in which bricks are painted and arranged into a pile.

Bricks are the building blocks of our communities; they are strong, versatile, and simple. A brick building can be beautiful, but is one brick beautiful on its own? The artist says yes. By individually painting the bricks, they each develop a personality within the assembly.

A bouquet of bricks.
